Green With a Touch of Gold
Peridot is one of very few gemstones that occurs in only one colour — there is no blue peridot or red peridot, only green, ranging from a yellowish olive to a fresh lively lime. The golden undertone is characteristic and comes from iron within the crystal structure, which is why peridot looks warm where emerald looks cool.
It has an unusual origin story: peridot forms deep in the earth's mantle and reaches the surface through volcanic activity, and it has also been found in meteorites. Traditionally associated with renewal, lightness, and release from heaviness, the Peridot Bracelet is a stone about feeling better rather than being stronger.
Traditionally Worn as a Symbol Of
- Renewal — long linked with recovery and starting again.
- Lightness — setting down something you have carried too long.
- Freshness — the feeling of an early morning rather than a late night.
- Optimism — expecting the next stretch to be kinder than the last.
- Gratitude — noticing the good before it becomes background.
August's Stone
Peridot is the modern birthstone for August, shared with spinel, and is traditionally linked with Leo and Virgo. The ancient Egyptians mined it on the Red Sea island of Zabargad and called it the gem of the sun — a reasonable name for the only gemstone that comes in a single warm green.
Some historians believe several famous “emeralds” in European royal collections are in fact peridot, misidentified for centuries.
Caring for It
Peridot rates around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it is reasonably hard but not among the toughest. Two specific sensitivities are worth knowing, because they are unusual.
It reacts badly to acids — even mild household ones — so keep it away from cleaning products, vinegar, and citrus. It is also sensitive to rapid temperature change, which can cause internal fracturing, so avoid moving it from hot water to cold. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Wipe with a soft damp cloth, dry it, and store it away from harder beads.
Why Choose the Peridot Bracelet?
For an August birthday, for someone coming out the other side of a difficult period, or for yourself if what you need is not more grit but a bit of relief. The warm green is also unusually flattering and reads as fresh rather than earthy.
Its meaning is yours to decide, unbound to any single belief, culture, or tradition.
Wear it as a reminder that you are allowed to put something down.
